How does trucking insurance work?
Truck insurance is specialized commercial auto insurance that helps protect truck drivers, owner operators, and trucking companies in the event of accidents or incidents. Whether you're making local deliveries or hauling freight across the country, having the right protection will keep your business moving forward with confidence.
What does commercial truck insurance cover?
What a truck insurance policy includes depends on your specific needs and selections. Federal and state laws usually require minimum liability protection, which covers injuries and property damage you cause to others.
Optional truck insurance coverages can safeguard your vehicles and cargo, help with rental costs, and even provide roadside assistance if you break down. What you need will depend on how you operate, what you haul, and where you drive.
Common commercial truck insurance coverages
If you operate commercial trucks on public roadways, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandates minimum coverages for liability and cargo. States can have additional requirements for truck insurance that you must comply with, including:
Liability
Vehicle liability insurance is a required coverage for trucks. It helps with costs if you're responsible for an accident that causes bodily injury to another person or property damage to their belongings. Liability claims can include medical expenses, repairs to someone else's vehicle, and damage to other things, like mailboxes or buildings. The cost to clean up cargo spills can also be covered by liability.
The FMCSA sets minimum coverages for trucks, according to truck class, weight, and type of cargo. Minimums for liability range from $300,000 to $5,000,000. Our trucking insurance experts understand federal and state liability requirements and can help you find the right coverage to ensure compliance.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist
If you get into an accident with another driver who doesn't have auto insurance or coverage limits high enough to pay for your injuries or damage to your vehicle, uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage can pay your medical and repair bills. It can also cover lost income if you can't work because of the accident.
Some states require this coverage and set the amount you need, but you can elect to have higher limits, which is the maximum amount your coverage would pay for a claim.
Collision
Collision insurance pays to repair or replace your truck if it rolls, overturns, or hits an object, even if you're at fault. Keep in mind that many lenders require collision insurance for leased or financed trucks.
Collision is always included with comprehensive or fire and theft with combined additional coverage (CAC).
Comprehensive
Comprehensive insurance protects you from unexpected events that are not collisions or accidents. For example, if your truck gets stolen, vandalized, or catches fire, comprehensive coverage pays to repair or replace it. It also covers broken glass and collisions with animals.
When purchasing comprehensive insurance, you'll choose a deductible, which is the amount you pay if you have a claim. A higher deductible can lower your insurance price.
Fire and theft with CAC
When purchasing fire and theft with CAC, you'll need to submit a stated amount for the vehicle and set an out-of-pocket deductible.
Motor truck cargo
Motor truck cargo insurance covers transported goods against damage, loss, or other harm. The FMCSA requires a minimum amount of cargo insurance, but clients and shippers often want higher limits to adequately cover the goods being transported. Cargo insurance includes optional and enhanced protections:
- Refrigeration breakdown can be added as an endorsement to protect reefer trucks if their cargo spoils due to refrigeration system failure.
- Cargo Plus is a new feature of Progressive Commercial's cargo insurance that expands coverage to protect your freight from wetness, rust, or corrosion. If combined with a refrigeration breakdown endorsement, it can also cover changes in temperature that damage cargo and are the driver's fault.
Medical payments
Medical payments insurance, or MedPay, covers the driver and any passengers injured in an accident, regardless of who is at fault. Some states require this insurance, though it isn't available nationwide.
When purchasing this coverage, you'll select a limit for the maximum amount paid out for a claim for each person in an accident.
Choosing coverage amounts
The right coverage limits will depend on your business, truck, and cargo. To figure out what's appropriate for you, start with the minimum coverage required by law. From there, assess your risks and assets. You want enough coverage to protect your business, but you don't want to pay for protection you don't need.
You'll also want to choose deductibles that make sense. A deductible is what you'll pay when you make a claim. While higher deductibles can lower your premium, you don't want a deductible so high that you can't comfortably pay it.

Additional commercial truck insurance coverages
You can customize your insurance policy with optional coverages for added layers of protection. Standard truck insurance coverages you should consider include:
Non-trucking liability
Truckers under permanent lease with a motor carrier can get non-trucking liability (NTL) insurance to protect them when their truck is used for non-business purposes. If you cause an accident while off the job, it'll pay for injuries and property damage to others.
NTL is not available to drivers who are required to make federal or state filings, actively drive a truck for another company, or are in a trailer interchange.
General liability for truckers
Motor truck general liability (GL) can protect truckers from a variety of claims related to their business activities, as long as they're not driving their truck at the time. For example, truckers GL can cover incidents at loading docks, rest stops, or similar locations.
Risk managers often require for-hire drivers to have truckers GL. This insurance can cover costs if someone gets hurt or something gets damaged while you work. It can also help pay for medical bills, damage to a place you rent, or problems related to business ads or social media posts.
Rental reimbursement with downtime
Rental reimbursement with downtime minimizes your financial loss if you get into an accident and your truck is damaged. If you can't find a rental truck, this coverage can help replace lost income for up to 30 days.
When adding this coverage, you'll select a maximum amount per day for rental costs. Not all types of trucks are eligible for rental reimbursement.
Trailer interchange
For truckers who contract with other companies to complete shipments by transferring trailers, trailer interchange insurance protects the trailer you don't own from damage if something happens while driving or at the loading dock.
Heavy truck roadside assistance
Heavy truck roadside assistance covers breakdowns countrywide and gets you back on the road as fast as possible. This coverage includes 24/7 towing and other emergency services like tire changes, battery jump-starts, fuel fill-ups, and winching.
Progressive Commercial's roadside assistance pays up to $500 in labor and $5,000 in towing per breakdown with a $250 deductible.
Pet injury
If you have a pet who rides with you on your long-haul trips, our pet injury coverage can help if your animals are hurt in an accident. This coverage pays for vet bills up to $1,000 and is included with collision insurance at no extra charge and with no deductible.
Additional coverages for tow trucks
Tow truck companies have additional insurance needs because of the nature of their business. The following coverages are designed to protect them from financial loss in case of damage to customers' vehicles when being towed or parked.
Garagekeepers legal liability
If a vehicle you are storing is damaged by fire, theft, vandalism, or collision, garagekeepers legal liability insurance will pay to repair or replace it. When adding this coverage to your policy, you'll set a maximum per-occurrence limit and a per-vehicle deductible. For example, you might choose a $2,500 per-occurrence and $500 per-vehicle maximum. If costs exceed the maximum, you'll pay the difference.
On-hook towing
On-hook towing insurance can be added when you have a liability insurance policy. This coverage pays for damage to vehicles when they're being towed. The damage could be a result of collision, fire, theft, or vandalism. When adding this insurance, you'll set a deductible and maximum per-occurrence limit.
